In an era where misinformation spreads faster than facts, getting accurate and culturally relevant health information into our communities has never been more urgent—or more challenging. From vaccines to mental health, trusted messengers often find themselves doing double duty: providing services and correcting the record.
That’s where the Michigan Health Communications Initiative (MHCI) comes in and it’s a game-changer for those working on the front-line in Washtenaw County.
MHCI is a statewide effort led by the Public Good Projects in collaboration with the Michigan Association for Local Public Health. Their goal is to support organizations, health departments, and community leaders with ready-to-use, evidence-informed messaging that helps people make healthier choices and feel more confident in the information they receive.
Why This Matters for WHI Partners
As WHI partners do their work in our community, access to accurate, timely messaging tools is essential. But many organizations do not have the time or resources to create this messaging themselves.
MHCI offers a Resource Download Center full of social media graphics, flyers, and videos covering critical topics like:
- Mental health and wellness
- Vaccine safety and access
- STI awareness and prevention
- Substance use and recovery support
Everything is downloadable, customizable, and easy to use, whether you’re tabling at an event or sharing info on your organization’s Facebook page.
Built With Communities, For Communities
MHCI isn’t a top-down communication campaign. One of the most promising parts of this initiative is its Community Insights Form, where local residents and partners can report what they’re hearing in their own neighborhoods.
What’s confusing people? What rumors are spreading? What health questions are coming up again and again?
That feedback directly informs the content MHCI develops, helping ensure it’s not just clinically accurate, but culturally and contextually relevant, too.
Stay in the Loop—and Stay Equipped
MHCI also offers a monthly newsletter with new resources, updates on trending health topics, and examples of how partners across the state are using the tools in real time. It’s a quick, easy way to stay plugged in and keep your outreach current.

As the WHI continues its commitment to bridging gaps between health and social services, MHCI is a powerful tool to keep in the toolkit. We can all use these resources to amplify community voices and strengthen vital – and true – health messages.
